Abstract
Depression has become a subject of great influence worldwide, since social changes have
considerably affected the adaptability of people, especially children and young people. Therefore,
Gonzales Lugo, et al (2018), found that social support can counteract the negative effects of the
emotional state. Educational institutions are usually a representative environment to observe
symptoms related to depression in young people, since it is the place where they spend most of
their time. An important feature that has been taken for this research is academic performance, in
order to analyze whether there is a correlation between depression and school performance in a
public institution in Medialuna, Magdalena. The study is of a quantitative correlational nature,
with a sample of 50 students belonging to the tenth grade, the ages range from 15 to 19 years. The
data was collected through the Zung Depression Scale (EAMD), in addition, the school grades that
the students had were analyzed. Consequently, results are obtained where the presence of
symptoms associated with depression is evidenced, mainly in the aspect of mood, where 40% of
the students feel unloved, sad or unhelpful.
The correlation obtained between the variables is -0.065, which means that despite the fact
that there is a tendency to inversely relate the variables, it does not show a significant correlation
with respect to the sample analyzed.
