Los estudios sobre pensamiento visual tienen su origen fuera del campo de la educación matemática, sin embargo, existe un renovado interés por comprender las implicaciones que tiene el uso de diferentes representaciones visuales en la enseñanza y aprendizaje de las matemáticas y la resolución de problemas no rutinarios y retadores. Los términos visualización y pensamiento visual son usados de manera indistinta en contribuciones sobre pensamiento geométrico, espacial, creativo, divergente, entre otros, que refieren algunas potencialidades, dificultades y limitaciones en diferentes niveles educativos.

Abstract
Studies on visual thinking have their origin outside the field of mathematics education; however, there is a renewed interest in understanding the implications of using different visual representations in the teaching and learning of math and in solving non-routine and challenging problems. The terms visualization and visual thinking are used interchangeably in contributions in geometric, spatial, creative, and divergent thinking, among others, which refer to various potentialities, difficulties, and limitations at different educational levels.
