Abstract
Enamel development defects (EDD) are quantitative or qualitative alterations that are clinically visible due to alterations during the secretion of the enamel matrix or its biomineralization. EDDs have been associated with dental caries, fractures and excessive wear. The aim of the study was to verify the association of defects in the development of enamel and dental caries in first permanent molars. A descriptive, observational study was carried out, using intraoral photographs of patients between 7 and 15 years of age in pediatric dentistry at the Faculty of Dentistry of the UAN in Bogotá, which were used under the authorization of the directives of the Faculty of Dentistry to protect the identity of the patients. Sampling was done at convenience, it was constituted by photographs of 40 patients, 454 surfaces of first permanent molars were evaluated, caries were evaluated with the ICDAS system and the DDE with the IDF index. The association between dental caries with the DDE was verified (0.02), there was a greater association between the opacity marked with dental caries. (0.00), followed by diffuse opacity with dental caries (0.04), where the least association with dental caries was with hypoplasia (0.06).
