Abstract
The main purpose of this research project was to evaluate the functioning of the functional prototype of the toothbrush with an irrigation system and interchangeable tips, through a pilot test. This prototype was designed and manufactured for brushing and hygiene during fixed orthopedic treatment. The main objective of this project is to evaluate if the designed and manufactured brush meets the expected requirements, if its characteristics, size and functions are efficient, as well as to test if the irrigation system and its four tips adequately fulfill their function that is to properly brush. To execute the pilot test, six ivorine models were used and each one with a cemented fixed orthopedic device, for each of these devices a simulation of food deposits with artificial saliva, crushed biscuit and plate revealing drops was prepared, applying said mixture on each model and brushing for approximately 3 minutes on each model. The results obtained indicate that the effectiveness of the functional prototype of the brush is excellent, its design with interchangeable tips and irrigation system help to make brushing and cleaning of fixed braces and models more efficient.
This research project has the opportunity to continue with its evaluative process as a second phase in order to determine the effectiveness of the toothbrush in patients undergoing fixed orthopedic treatment.
