Abstract
The steel sector, being a fundamental part of the industry, faces significant challenges. Steel production is inherently a resource-intensive process that involves the generation of considerable amounts of waste, placing it at the epicenter of the debate on environmental responsibility and resource efficiency. This degree work focuses on addressing this challenge through the valorization of these by-products, constituting a key approach in the promotion of sustainability and environmental management in this context. The main objective of this research is to conduct a comprehensive literature review to analyze waste valorization practices in the Colombian steel industry through the selection and critical analysis of scientific studies and success stories. The results obtained from this review underline the importance of these practices in the steel industry, not only in terms of waste reduction and minimization of environmental impact, but also in the generation of economic opportunities. Valorization not only contributes to the circular economy, but also promotes resource efficiency and the creation of valuable byproducts, highlighting the importance of these techniques as an essential strategy to contribute to sustainable development. The findings point to the need to promote the adoption of these practices through policies and regulations, as well as collaboration between different actors in the sector. Waste valorization not only contributes to responsible environmental management, but also offers economic opportunities and improvements in process efficiency, thus driving a positive transformation in the Colombian steel industry towards a more sustainable model.
