Abstract
Dental handpieces used in clinical practice are a very high focus for the accumulation of potentially infectious microorganisms and for cross-contamination to exist. Ultraviolet C light is a type of electromagnetic radiation produced artificially, which has been used successfully during the last few years as a germicidal agent, demonstrating more and more its effectiveness in equipment used in different areas of health, especially in dental practice. This experimental research project seeks to demonstrate the efficacy of the portable box with ultraviolet C light as an aerobic bactericidal agent in handpieces. For this purpose, 96 samples were taken by the direct swabbing method from the contaminated handpieces after patient care and then ultraviolet C light was applied in the portable box to the handpieces for 10 minutes following the indications of the manufacturer's technical data sheet; and subsequent samples were taken by the direct swabbing method. Then the aerobic bacterial growth before and after exposure with ultraviolet C light was determined by the colony count method in plate and the absorbance quantity measurement was determined in the spectrophotometer. Materials and methods: This experimental study was carried out with 96 handpieces from the adult clinical practice of the Antonio Nariño University, Neiva campus.
