Abstract
In the project, a methodology is developed to define how to combine the available predictive
maintenance technologies such as: vibration analysis, wear detection, oil analysis,
thermography, ultrasound, among others, which, when applied to alternative internal
combustion engines, specifically of the Cummins brand, 6BTA series, they allow to detect
and measure parameters and trends of the operating state, which allows timely maintenance
that avoids unforeseen failures, improving its operational availability. Conventional
vibration analysis is not applied, since it is not capable of specifically detecting the failure
of equal components that operate at the same frequency. For this reason, it is proposed to
use specialized diagnostic equipment that combines Windrock-type vibration and ultrasound
measurements to identify components that are individually damaged and operate at the same
frequency, establishing amplitude limits of the vibration speed as expressed by the
manufacturer Cummins. in their workshop manual and guides to ISO 2372-10816 [7]. In
addition, the critical components of the engines analyzed in their operating context and their
corresponding predictive parameters and limit ranges according to the manufacturer's
manual are defined by means of Pareto analysis, in order to periodically carry out the
evolution of the defined predictive parameters.
Also, an economic technical analysis is applied to measure the feasibility when applying the
predictive maintenance approach in the management of this type of assets. An annual saving
of 8 million pesos per engine is estimated, including losses due to lost profits, which makes
the implementation of predictive maintenance in the fleet of ships attractive from a monetary
perspective, to improve their availability and profit indicators. Finally, because it is more
representative of the annual calculation of costs for the fleet, a cost model is proposed, based
on the failure rate of these engines, to quantify the annual savings by reducing the failure
rate, which is left as possible. future research, basis of a complementary degree work.
