Abstract
Aluminum 6061 is an alloy that currently has a wide variety of applications due to its
characteristics such as its low density in relation to other metallic materials, ductile, does
not generate spark and no toxicity; However, the Alloy can be affected by atmospheric
corrosion when used in coastal applications. For this reason, this study focuses on the
characterization of the corrosion behavior of the 6061 aluminum alloy in the city of
Cartagena de Indias.
The specimens of the alloy exposed in three strategic places are analyzed (walled area,
Mamonal industrial area and commercial / urban area, inside the city) will be analyzed in
order to evaluate their behavior in the city. The samples considered in the project
correspond to probes exposed at each specified site for 1, 6 and 12 months. The
characterization of the behavior of this aluminum alloy will be carried out from the
electrochemical technique of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), for each of
the indicated exposure times, carrying out an analysis of the impedance results and
simulation by means of an electrical circuit. equivalent, and the observation of the
morphology of the corrosion product formed will be carried out by scanning electron
microscopy using samples after one year of exposure.
