Abstract
Studies consulted in the literature review found that young people are a group
of people with knowledge of HIV/AIDS and STIs, however, they perform risky
sexual encounters and predominantly do not use condoms, which motivates to do
further research to understand where young people stand in regards to this topic.
Objective: to analyze social representations on condom use in young people, men and
women between the ages of 18 and 21 in the city of Cali, Colombia.
The methodology of the research is phenomenological, with a qualitative and
descriptive scope; the sample included five young men and women, residing in the
city of Cali, between the ages of 18 and 21. According to the interviews conducted, it
was concluded that the main reason for condom use was to avoid pregnancy, which
downplayed the significance of using a condom to prevent a sexually transmitted
disease. It was found that the reasons for which condoms are not used are: because it
doesn’t feel the same and because it’s uncomfortable. Conclusions: the results allows
to identify personal experiences and knowledge of young people in regards to the use
and non-use of condom, which will be taken into consideration in future interventions
that develop new strategies to minimize the risk of sexually transmitted disease and
have young people think about their health and that of their partner by being
responsible and careful.
