Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the stability of the tear film and its association with the symptomatology and quality of life in workers of the Antonio Nariño University exposed to video thermal.
Materials and methods: A quantitative, observational, correlational study was carried out in university administrative officials, VDT users with 6 hours of daily exposure. The BUT and Schirmer II tests, as well as the OSDI symptom survey, and the quality of life test associated with vision (VFQ-25), the participants were evaluated before starting their workday and final.
Results: The use of videoterminals produces significant symptoms after 6 hours of exposure, there were positive correlations with the BUT and Schirmer, as well as with the OSDI and VFQ-25. In relation to OSDI and BUT, an inverse negative correlation was obtained (r = -0.67); Schirmer shows strong and inverse correlation with OSDI (r = -0.95) and VFQ-25 presents moderate positive correlation with BUT (r = 0.74).
Conclusions: Tear stability shows an association with symptoms and quality of life, showing greater tear rupture and tear film evaporation, as well as reduced tear volume, associated with greater ocular and visual symptoms.
