Abstract
Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, its main risk factor is the increase in intraocular pressure causing damage to the optic nerve and also affecting the visual field, the prevalence of glaucoma increases in people over 60 years of age, therefore, detection and proper treatment are required to prevent the progression of this disease. Objective: To analyze the strategies and aspects of public health that can decrease the prevalence of glaucoma as a visual disability. Methodology: A bibliographic review was performed in different databases using Mesh terms. Results: It was evidenced that the countries with the lowest prevalence of glaucoma are Australia, Japan and Saudi Arabia, since in each of these there are promotion and prevention strategies obtaining good results in terms of glaucoma management, it was also evidenced that there are policies in Colombia promotion and prevention against glaucoma but a restructuring of these is necessary, mainly in terms of the training of optometrists, high-tech clinical equipment, updating of drugs for the treatment of glaucoma.
