dc.description.abstractGallic acid, or 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid, is a naturally derived polyphenolic compound used for the treatment of systemic diseases, including inflammatory diseases, but with the probability of generating cytotoxicity in non-pathogenic microorganisms when administered in high concentrations. The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the cytotoxic effect of gallic acid on periodontal ligament fibroblasts. An experimental in vitro study was carried out using gallic acid concentrations of 1, 5, 10 and 20µM, with exposure times of 12, 24 and 48 hours, implementing the flow cytometry technique with propidium iodide and performing positive and negative controls of cell death with hydrogen peroxide and DMSO. The negative cell death control averaged 95.47% at 12 hours and 93.83% at 48 hours. Triplicate assays were performed at each exposure time and concentration of gallic acid, where cell viability remained in a range of 90-98.4%, with a proportional behavior with increasing concentration. In conclusion, gallic acid had a few cytotoxic effect on periodontal ligament fibroblasts, opening the door for its use in periodontal therapeutics.es_ES

dc.description.tableofcontentsEl ácido gálico, o ácido 3,4,5 trihidroxibenzoico, es un compuesto polifenolico de origen natural empleado para el tratamiento de enfermedades sistémicas, incluidas las inflamatorias, pero con la probabilidad de generar citotoxicidad en microorganismos no patógenos al ser administrado en altas concentraciones. El objetivo de la presente investigación fue evaluar el efecto citotóxico del ácido gálico en fibroblastos del ligamento periodontal. Se realizó un estudio experimental in vitro, empleando concentraciones de ácido gálico de 1, 5, 10 y 20µM, con unos tiempos de exposición de 12, 24 y 48 horas, implementando la técnica de citometría de flujo con yoduro de propidio y realizando controles positivo y negativo de muerte celular con peróxido de hidrógeno y DMSO. El control negativo de muerte celular tuvo un promedio de 95,47% a las 12 horas y 93,83% a las 48 horas. Se efectúan ensayos por triplicado en cada tiempo de exposición y concentración del ácido gálico, donde la viabilidad celular permaneció en un intervalo del 90- 98,4%, con un comportamiento proporcional al incrementar la concentración. En conclusión, el ácido gálico tuvo un mínimo efecto citotóxico en los fibroblastos del ligamento periodontal, abriendo la puerta para su uso en la terapéutica periodontal.es_ES
