Abstract
Introduction: Water is the main source of fluoride exposure and when there is a chronic and excessive intake of fluoride during the period of tooth formation it can lead to fluorosis, which is a defect in the development of the enamel.
Objective: To determine the concentration of fluoride in the urban aqueduct of the municipality of Timbío, to confirm or rule out the risk of dental fluorosis.
Materials and methods: A descriptive exploratory study, consisting of taking 16 water samples from storage tanks, sampling devices, residential water, and control samples. The instrument for the pH sample collection was: Alla France pH-14 METRO DIG 0-14-0 with Precision = 0.1 pH; Resolution: 0.1, for the analysis of fluoride concentration water samples were taken in polypropylene containers arranged by the laboratory of environmental studies of the University of Antioquia, following the respective biosafety regulations and the protocol provided by the Ministry of Social Protection following the necessary protocols for water sampling both for taps, storage tanks, and control sample.
Results: In the present study, we found fluoride concentrations below 0.210 mg/L, taking into account this value we find that it is below the WHO recommended optimal reference value for fluoride in drinking water which is 0.7 mg/L, and for the prevention of dental caries concentrations between 0.5 and 1.0 mg/L. The pH was found at an average of 7.2 and the range between 7.0 and 7.8.
Conclusions: The concentration of fluoride present in the water of the aqueduct of the urban zone of the municipality of Timbío does not represent a risk of toxicity to present dental fluorosis.
