Abstract
Background. Enamel and dentin fractures are the most frequent among the pathologies associated with dental trauma. In recent years it has been on the rise due to the increase in extreme sports practices, among others. Early diagnosis and treatment can avoid possible complications Objective. To describe the frequency of enamel and dentin fractures in children and young adults in the department of Cauca. Materials and methods. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in 109 surveys of 3-year-old children and 18-year-old young adults. The data were obtained from the national oral health study. The .txt file was exported to an Excel spreadsheet and the data corresponding to the department of Cauca for the selected ages were extracted. The sociodemographic variables sex, age, stratum, social security system and municipality were analyzed; and the variables type of viii enamel and / or dentin fracture, and number of compromised teeth. The data were analyzed in the SPSS statistical package and described with frequency and averages tables for the quantitative variables. Results. Enamel fracture had a prevalence of 11.01% and that of enamel fracture with dentin involvement was 1.83%. The average number of affected teeth per individual was 1.86 teeth. Enamel fractures were more frequent in men (58.3%) than in women (41.7%), in young adults (66.7%) than in children. It was also more frequent in the lower stratum (75%). El Patia was the municipality in which it appeared most frequently. Conclusions. The frequency of enamel fractures in the department of Cauca is high and can be considered a potential public health problem. Key words: enamel, dentin, tooth fractures, tooth injuries.
