Abstract
Introduction: Bournout is called like a síndrome that involves emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and decreased professional performance, having direct consequences in individuals who somehow work with other people, this syndrome could be associated with elevated or reduced cortisol levels in saliva. Objective: correlate salivary cortisol levels to the Burnout Syndrome in students of Dental Clinics, Antonio Nariño University of the Ibagué campus. Materials and methods: the study was carried out with students of the dentistry program of the Antonio Nariño University in the sixth, eighth and tenth semesters. A sociodemographic survey and the Maslach test were carried out. A salivary sample was taken to determine cortisol and correlation tests and multivariate analysis were included for statistical analysis. Results: it was found that the levels of Burnout in older students, those who are in higher semesters and with longer hours of study, are the ones that present the highest rate of exhaustion or emotional fatigue, where the tendency to increase with Regarding the semester progresses. Students in the tenth semester show lower levels of cortisol unlike the sixth semester that present higher levels with statistical significance. Of the 100% of the participants, only 5.4% (n = 2) had the syndrome, however, the saliva values of the studied population indicated an early stage or the risk of appearance of Burnout. Conclusions: The participants who presented alteration in the three out-of-range parameters already diagnosed with Burnout had undetectable cortisol levels, that is, 0 ng / mL, this means that, if there is an association between cortisol levels with Burnout with a marked tendency, which responds to the HA hypothesis: if there is a relationship between salivary cortisol levels and Burnout syndrome in students at the Antonio Nariño University, Ibagué campus.
