Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the dental morphological features present in a Nasa indigenous school population in Jambaló (Cauca, Colombia) . MATERIALS AND METHOD: A descriptive study was carried out on eight NMDT (Carabelli cusp, hypocone reduction, protostilyd, deflecting wrinkle, cusp pattern, cusp number, cusp 6 and cusp 7) from the Nasa school population, located in the Cauca reserve. The study included 154 second temporary molars and 189 first permanent molars from 48 subjects (28 female and 20 male) between 7 to 11 years of age. Hence, 48 alginate impressions were carved out from type III plaster models. Standardization (Kappa > 0.8) procedures were set in, while frequency observation for sexual dimorphism was confirmed through Mann-Whitney U test. The bilateral symmetry and correlation between features was established through the Wilcoxon test and the population dendrogram analysis through Ward link. RESULTS: It was discovered a very high frequency (89.6%) of "Y" cusp pattern in temporary teeth, and a very low frequency (2.1%) for cusp 7. There was not a significant statistical difference for sexual dimorphism, bilateral symmetry. There was a correlation was encountered between features at the Carabelli´s cusp and the reduction of the hypocone on teeth 55 and 16.CONCLUSIONS: The most frequent morphological feature was the Y cups pattern, for both temporary and permanent teeth. There is an absence of bilateral symmetry and no sexual dimorphism of the coronal dental morphological features in the Nasa indigenous community.
